Hydrobiological study supporting the  theory that the relatively high species richness and abundance of desmids in  the phytoplankton of deep , tropical lakes  may be attributed to continuous mixing of the epilimnion as a result of large diurnal variations of air temperature.

Experimental studies on 7 desmid species originating from habitats  much differing in alkalinity. It is shown that desmids cannot be simply characterized as exclusive CO2 users .  All species tested, to a greater or less extent were able to use also bicarbonate as a carbon source.
