Empty cell of Euastrum gayanum showing cell wall sculpturing in the form of a central inflation and some scattered granules near the margins.
Eu. gayanum is a very small-sized, but nevertheless rather characteristic Euastrum species. Cells are but a little bit longer than broad and semicells are about trapeziform with deeply concave lateral sides between the truncate basal lobes and the somewhat dilating apical lobes. Apices with a broad, median V-shaped indentation. Semicells are provided with a flattened central inflation and some scattered marginal and inframarginal granules. In the Netherlands, Eu. gayanum is widely distributed and of occasional occurrence in slightly acidic, mesotrophic water bodies.
